Description

Montegrappa Italian Maritime Republics – Amalfi Rollerball

Limited Edition of 95 rollerballs · Handcrafted in Bassano del Grappa, Italy

With the Italian Maritime Republics collection, Montegrappa pays tribute to the four city-states that ruled Mediterranean trade for centuries: Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice. Each republic gets its own writing instrument, released one at a time so that the character of each design stands on its own. The series opens with Amalfi, a collector's piece that brings together history, goldsmithing techniques and the artisan craftsmanship of the oldest Italian pen maker.

Amalfi: the first of the Maritime Republics

Amalfi was the first of Italy's great maritime powers. Its merchants linked the Christian West with the Arab and Byzantine East, turning the Mediterranean into a route for trade, culture and knowledge. The city also shaped the history of navigation. Its most important legacy is the Tabula de Amalphi, the oldest Italian maritime code, which remained in use for centuries. The pen is engraved with the republic's motto, "Descendit ex patribus romanorum".

Design details

  • The Mediterranean in enamel: the barrel is finished in translucent enamel that recalls the depths of the sea. The Italian peninsula rises from it in antique brass micro-casting.
  • A natural sapphire: a genuine sapphire marks the exact position of Amalfi on the map.
  • A city sculpted in metal: the cap reproduces St. Andrew's Cathedral and the Cloister of Paradise in three-dimensional micro-casting. You can see the pointed arches, geometric patterns and Arab-Norman influences of the Amalfi Coast's most famous landmark.
  • A working compass: a functional compass is hidden beneath the Amalfi Cross, the ancient emblem of the Republic. It honours Flavio Gioia, the Amalfi navigator traditionally credited with improving the compass by mounting the needle on a pivot and pairing it with the wind rose.
  • Nautical clip: the clip draws on historical navigation symbols and the Amalfi coat of arms.

The writing experience

The rollerball version has all the artistry of the collection and writes with the ease of liquid ink. It needs no filling and no maintenance, and it lays down a smooth, consistent line from the very first stroke. It takes original Montegrappa rollerball refills, and the screw-on cap keeps it secure. At 103 g and 22 mm in diameter, it is a substantial pen with real presence on the desk. It is ideal for signatures, daily writing and collectors who want to enjoy a unique piece every day.
